EIDOLA: weiland Pianist, 1940, is part of a series of 24 drawings created in the final stage of Paul Klee's life. The Swiss painter and musician portrays the souls of musicians who, having lost their instruments, continue to play music using their own bodies. In Pianist, the keyboard is represented as part of the body, reflecting Klee’s deep connection with music and his wife, Lily Stumpf, a pianist herself. However, only the black keys of the piano are visible, while the white keys remain invisible.
"I started playing the piano at the age of nine, and despite knowing the keyboard by heart, each musical composition made me look at the instrument in new ways. When I place my hands on the keyboard, I see not only the cadence of the keys but also the gracefulness of my fingers gliding over them."
— Joana Santos Barbosa
The Pianist Coffee Table is an artistic representation, not of the piano, but of the hands of the artist — a vehicle for both technique and emotion. The brass blades on the table design mimic the form of the four longest fingers, while the white Estremoz marble surface symbolizes the piano's keys, releasing a melody hidden within the notes.
